22 Things I've Learnt In 22 Years
So, as some of you may know today marks 22 years of being on this planet. While I am definitely still learning and making mistakes, I wanted to share 22 things I've learnt in 22 years.
I'm sure in another 22 years I'll think completely different and have learnt so much more but I thought this was a good way to commemorate turning 22 and the stage I'm at in my life.
01.Moving away from home is one of the hardest but most rewarding experiences: Choosing to move away for university is still one of my greatest achievements. It was so hard and I constantly still miss my family but it has definitely made me a stronger, more independent person and I'm so grateful that my family were so supportive!
02.If you want something, work for it: Work until you can't work anymore. Unfortunately, we don't live in a world where opportunities are just handed to us — you've got to work for it. It will all (hopefully) pay off in the end and honestly you'll feel better knowing how much effort you've put into it.
03.If something is important to you, don't let someone's opinion stop you: My blog is important to me — it gives me an escape and is something I love doing — but I know there are a lot of people that think it's silly, a waste of time etc. and if I listened to them I'd probably never blog. Sometimes you've just got to do something for yourself.
04.Loving yourself comes first: I'm still learning to love myself fully but it has already completely changed how I feel about myself and my relationships. The saying that "you've got to love yourself before you can love anyone else" is so true and has helped me become more comfortable in both myself and my relationship.
05.Find that perfect lipstick that makes you feel super confident: For me, there is nothing better than a classic red lip or a deep plum lip to make me feel 100x better about the day ahead.
06.Friends will drift: Sometimes life gets in the way and you will drift from your friends but it's those who keep in contact and make an equal effort who will be friends for life. I'm really lucky to have found a bunch of fantastic friends that are so understanding. Friends that I can go months without seeing but then it feels like no time has passed at all when we do finally manage to have a catch up.
07.Family is so important: My family is pretty big but we are all pretty close. However, it is so easy to get caught up with life and forget to take the time to visit family. This year I am going to make an extra effort to try visit most of my family as I haven't really seen much of them in the past four years.
08.There is always room for cake: No matter how healthy you're trying to be, you should always let yourself enjoy a good slice of cake — or two! — from time to time.
09.Don't be afraid to make mistakes: Mistakes help us to grow and learn so we shouldn't be afraid to make them. Some of my mistakes I've learnt so much from and there are some that I still regret to this day. Once a mistake happens though, you can't take it back all you can do is apologise and learn from that experience.
10.Be in an environment that makes you happy: I love my little flat, it literally makes me so happy to spend a day pottering about cleaning, cooking or just watching tv. I feel so comfortable here and there is nothing better than coming home after a crappy day at work to my happy place.
11.Surround yourself with supportive people: I've been really lucky to have some of the most supportive friends and family. They are like my mini cheerleaders who keep me going and offer me such great advice. I am eternally grateful to be able to call them friends and I just hope I provide as much support and love as they give me.
12.Sometime's you have to do a crappy job in order to pay the bills: This is my current situation and I can't wait for the day that I can give it up and spend my whole day designing. For now though, it's what I need to be able to pay the bills.
13.Everyone needs a break: It is so important to take time for yourself. Some days you just need to spend the whole day in bed doing nothing. It's not you being selfish or lazy it is simply you letting your batteries recharge so you can carry on doing what you love without burning out.
14.Stop beating yourself up: I am really bad for putting a lot of pressure on myself when things don't work out the way I'd hoped. Sometimes things don't go as planned and instead of beating yourself up about it, you just need to figure out a new path to get your plans back on track.
15.Everyone has a story to tell: I find it so interesting meeting new people and learning about their life and what makes them happy. I have learnt so much through other people that is so invaluable. It has taught me that you definitely shouldn't judge a book by it's cover.
16.Dogs truly are life's little treasures: I can't wait for the day Ross and I can get a dog. I feel like they bring so much joy to your life and just make the world a happier place.
17.Choosing between your heart and your head is the most difficult thing: This is one of the most difficult lessons I've learnt. Your heart will most likely always win but when it comes to career choice and your happiness sometimes you've got to do what's best for you. If it's meant to be, it will be.
18.Just because your friends are getting married / having babies doesn't mean you have to: Everyone goes at their own pace. Currently, figuring out my career is the most important thing — babies and weddings will just have to wait.
19.Stop overthinking: I am the queen of overthinking and it can be the most detrimental thing to both your mental health and your relationships. I'm trying really hard this year to try not focus on the negatives and the what ifs and just live life in the moment.
20.Make sure you capture memories: I am so bad at remembering to take photos and document special occasions or even just the happy little moments. But looking back at the photographs I do have makes me so happy and can put me in such a good mood.
21.Girl on girl hate is such a waste of time: Honestly, it takes up so much effort and is just so unnecessary.
22.Enjoy your life: If you're not enjoying your life then something has got to change. You never know how long you've got so make sure you are living a life that you love.
This post was quite a long one but I hope you enjoyed it. Do you have any life lessons to add? I'd love to hear them.
